Bats

Well we had bats at the lake, but they only woke up at night. My dad said that if bats were awake during the day they probably had rabies!

The ones we have here seem to be awake all day??? The 2 of them look down on me everytime I go in or out of the cabana. Now I know what Kermit felt like on “the Muppet Show” when those hecklers were watching from the balcony.

I was worried yesterday when Brad said they were gone yesterday around 4, but I guess they are already out hunting by then. They were back this morning when I went up to check.

I think they’ve been eating the red banana bunch we have ripening on the deck, I guess it’s time to eat them. If they are good enough for the bats, they are good enough for us!

When my good camera gets here I can use the zoom lens to take a photo. As good as the iPhone camera is, it doesn’t zoom in or take close-ups very well. I guess the new model does, but of course the one I got 1 year ago doesn’t.

Sept 19/09 – Update on the bats

Well, I was worried for nothing, there are now between 8 and 10 bats hanging out on the cabana overhang. And I got pictures of them, it seems they like to have their photo taken. How do I know? Because brad shone a light on them and they all moved to the other side, except for 1. When I took a picture of him and they heard the shutter, they all flew back to where he was. Some of them even posed for pictures. So these bats eat the insects. I think they pollinate flowers too – the ones that bloom at night like Petaya.

And that’s not all, we found another type of bats living in the leaves of the trees in the front yard. They are lighter colored and bigger, they might be fruit bats. I think there are about 5 or 6 of them, can’t get a close enough look at them to say for sure – even with the binoculars. These must be the ones eating our bananas!

Oh yeah, and there are vampire bats here too, but they are more rare. We haven’t seen any of those yet. At least we don’t think we have…
